My Sister and I #1 (1993)

This painting is one of a series of portraits Beverly painted of her sister, Renee. Beverly says that she did not anticipate how they would turn out. "At first I was trying to paint her as someone who was similar to me because we were both outsiders. So I started a painting of her, and it would be a big, beautiful portrait of her, and then all of a sudden I would start scratching her face out. My brush would start erasing her image. It would feel good to do it, but I felt incredibly guilty about doing it and incredibly sad about doing it, and then I would cry on and on and on."
