14 Cows FOR AMERICA

14_cowsKimeli Naiyomah

There is a new children's book out on the bookshelves. It's called 14 Cows for America and is based on the true story of Kimeli Naiyomah.

Kimeli grew up in a small village in rural Kenya, a member of the Masai warrior tribe. He was homeless and his tribe did not value schooling, yet Kimeli managed to make his way to college in the United States.

Kimeli happened to be in New York when 9/11 occurred. When he went home several months later, his tribe had not heard of the tragedy. So he told them. What happened next made national headlines - and changed everything for Kimeli.

He talks with Janet Babin about the priceless gift his tribe made to the United States, and about his hopes for the future.

BANKERS, BROKERS AND BANDITS: Soul of a Scandal

Diane Buckshnis Diane Buckshnis

All this week we'll be listening back to the special reporting we did around the time of the financial crisis last fall. The series looked at the issue through the eyes of people who've been there.

Diane Buckshnis remembers another time when the economy suffered because of the decisions of financial leaders, regulators, and politicians: the 1980s Savings and Loan debacle.

Diane was a government examiner when she got assigned to the case that would become the symbol of the S & L scandal - the Keating case. Diane remembers when she met Charles Keating, chairman of Lincoln Savings and Loan. He was larger than life, and he had dreams of building the next Las Vegas - using his depositors' money.

Diane talks with host Dick Gordon about what she learned working on the infamous Keating case and what she thinks about today's financial meltdown. This story originally aired on October 15, 2008.
