Back from Afghanistan
Nick Fagerquist
More U.S. troops may soon be headed to Afghanistan under President Obama's new top commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal. Marine Sgt. Nicholas Fagerquist has just returned from there. Nick says the situation on the ground is tough: Over their seven-month deployment, his unit lost 12 Marines to IEDs and firefights. Nick is proud to have brought all of the Marines he led home safely. He's also proud of the work he did training Afghan National Police recruits in a remote area. Nick learned some Dari, the local language, to communicate with them better. He talks with Dick Gordon about what he saw and learned on his deployment about the challenges of serving in Afghanistan.
summer job: Sauerkraut Runner
Bob Goodale
Bob Goodale wrote to say that he has really enjoyed our series of summer job stories. When he was thirteen years old, Bob had an interesting summer job. Bob wrote, "I was a sauerkraut runner. Sauerkraut is cabbage and salt. The cabbage becomes moldy if the salt isn't evenly dispersed. In Iowa during 'sauerkraut season,' young men in hip boots trudged around in huge vats. My inseam is only 28" today, so you know I was a shorty back then. My job was to get in the vats when the brine was below their knees and 'run' around until the brine was well over their knees!"
It turns out, that summer job didn't turn Bob off from the food industry. He went on to become an onion dicer in the plant, and he kept rising in the ranks until he became the CEO of a supermarket chain. He joins Dick to recall the glory days of "sauerkraut running."
