From the cage to mainstream
Aaron Stark
Mixed martial arts used to be called cage fighting, extreme fighting, no holds barred fighting. John McCain once called it human cockfighting. But Senator McCain has since changed his mind, and the sport has now gone mainstream.
But who would ever want to step into a caged ring and exchange punches, kicks and choke holds with another person until you couldn't go on?
Aaron Stark is a professional mixed martial artist. He's college-educated, a member of MENSA and works at his family's Oregon vineyard. He talks to Dick Gordon about how what's most appalling about the sport is also what's most appealing.
Odd Jobs: Living in Two Worlds
Dick Gordon spoke with an author who supported her writing by cleaning houses. He asked listeners to contact the show if they also worked at mismatched jobs.
"Grace" contacted us. She was like every aspiring actress in LA - taking acting classes, going to auditions, and working part-time jobs to pay the bills. But either the pay wasn't enough, or the hours were wrong.
She finally struck the right balance by combining the steady pay of substitute teaching with a lucrative night job - exotic dancing. Grace talks with Dick about what it's like living and working in those two worlds.
