HOME in Angola

Daniel Henrique

Tensions around the recent election in Angola highlight the fact that it's one of Africa's richest countries, yet its people are among the continent's poorest. The election has special resonance for Daniel Henrique. He was born there and grew up in refugee camps. His father spent several years in a Zambian prison before he found a way to get the family to a stabler life in the U.S.

Daniel has always admired his father - a stern man and natural leader - and Daniel grew up wanting to be just like him. But Daniel's life has taken another path. He has chosen to stay in the United States, while his father has returned to start a new life in Angola.

Note: Daniel's photo is blurred and we're using a pseudonym for him, as his family in Angola would be endangered if they were identified.

Music heard in this story: Song of the Wild (Uma Uma) performed by Spirit Of Africa for the album Spirit of Africa

Contact Us

Meeting Charisma

Carolyn Maki

Carolyn Maki has been following our series on the personal side of politics - those moments when you realize that politics can (or can't) make a difference. Carolyn remembers the day she came face-to-face with charisma in the political scene. It happened when she was a high school student. And the politician? Let's just say it was someone her dad was not fond of. Carolyn talks to Dick about meeting Hubert Humphrey.

Contact Us
