Boycotts and birds

Floyd ScholzFloyd Scholz - larger >>

Some countries are planning to boycott the opening ceremonies at the summer Olympics in Beijing to protest China's human rights record. Floyd Scholz lived through an Olympic boycott. Back in the 1970s, Floyd was focused on competing in the decathlon at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. But after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, President Jimmy Carter announced the U.S. would boycott the games.

Floyd says the boycott almost ruined his life. In despair, he fled to rural Vermont, learned to play the banjo and went back to his childhood hobby of wood carving. Now he's a world-class carver and is getting ready for another competition at the World Wildfowl Carving Championship.

Music heard in this story: Blues Stay Away from Me performed by the Kruger Brothers for the album Choices.

Real Estate for the Saints

Ardell DellaLoggiaArdell DellaLoggia

Ardell DellaLoggia has a novel approach to coping with the volatile housing market. She's a real estate agent in the Seattle area, and has on a few occasions over the years turned to an unlikely source of help: statues of St. Joseph.

Some may say that burying the statue of a saint beneath a "For Sale" sign is sacrilegious. But Ardell tells Dick Gordon that if the person doing the burying acts with proper devotion, the saint will reward those who work hard to buy or sell a property.
