GITMO - LIFTING THE VEIL OF SECRECY

It's been five years since the first prisoners arrived at the US detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Candace Gorman

H. Candace Gorman is a civil rights attorney at a small firm in Chicago. When she volunteered to represent one of the prisoners in "Gitmo," she wondered if he would be one of the so-called "worst of the worst" picked up on the battlefield in Afghanistan. The client did not turn out to be the problem, though. She says it's the operations she has observed at the detention center over the past year that have shocked and sickened her.

First, Candace found out that her client landed at the center because he had been turned in for a bounty. Then she discovered that he had been judged as not being an enemy combatant. Later that decision was reversed based on secret evidence which, Candace asserts, does not exist.

Candace's client, like all the detainees there, has never been charged with a crime. In her frustration, Candace is now writing and speaking out about the injustice she sees.

See a bounty leaflet from Afghanistan

Read Candace's blog

Read articles written by Candace here and read an interview with her here

Add to story
