MADE IN THE USA: a factory reopens
The Cochrane Furniture Factory in Lincolnton, North Carolina had always been a family run firm, making wooden furniture since before the Civil War, but it closed three years ago feeling outnumbered by China. Recently, owner Bruce Cochrane has been watching the industry, as well as watching changes in the Asian manufacturing processes, and decided that it’s a good time to re-tool and reopen the plant. He’s already rehired several dozen workers, including his former HR manager Karen Padgett.
FILLING THE LOBSTER POTS
There is a whole generation of Americans who only had one job and pretty much kept it their whole lives. Some had the luck of being self employed, like 93-year-old Sam Eaton, a lobsterman off the coast of Maine. Independent producer Sarah Reynolds, with help from the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, takes a ride in Sam’s lobster boat.
