Anti-viral drugs are credited for prolonging the lives of an estimated 1.4 million HIV infected Americans and the numbers are climbing.

But in the 1980's, the outlook for someone was HIV was grim. David Robertson never expected to live more than five years when he was diagnosed with HIV in 1989. Anticipating an imminent death, David started to spend outrageously and incurred debt that he never intended to pay back. That was seventeen years ago.
On the cusp of World AIDS Day, Dick talks to David about his debt, shopping sprees and his "golden" life after what he thought was an HIV death sentence.

Bruce Levine at the University of Pennsylvania is researching genetically altered HIV cells. His aim: to make the cells fight among themselves to neutralize the virus.
His clinical trials have had numerous intriguing results. One male patient responded with a ninety-six percent reduction in his viral load.
Dick talks to Bruce about new approaches to treating HIV, including "personalized medication options" for people living with the disease.
