Managing the ditch
Estevan Arrellano is a farmer in New Mexico. Water is scarce there, and it reaches Estevan’s farm by one of the many centuries old irrigation ditches still in use today called acequias. Every year, landowners along these ditches choose a Mayordomo, or "ditch boss," who is in charge of distributing water to folks along the canal, and settling disputes when the creek runs dry.
